Google News is getting two useful updates. But the first one has a catch – Samsung Magazine
One of the most popular messaging apps is undoubtedly Google Messages, which Samsung has been pre-installing on its phones for some time. The American giant is constantly adding new features to it, most recently including the ability to lubricate messages for everyone. Now Messages is getting two more new features: support for text formatting and the ability to edit RCS messages sent to iPhones. But the first one has a catch.
Android Authority, citing Telegram users, reported that Google News support text formatting, but only when chattalking with an AI assistant GeminiA Telegram user named derelict_arch_spotted reported to the website that Gemini replied to him using bold text and formatted code.
The responses were styled using Markdown, a lightweight markup language popular in apps like Slack, Reddit, or ChatGPT. This language allows Gemini wrap bold text in double asterisks and code in back annotations. It seems that this the function is part of the backend part of the application and renders formatted text correctly, but only for messages from GeminiRegular users cannot style their own messages using Markdown, nor do they have formatting options.
It’s unclear why this feature is limited to Google’s AI assistant, but it’s likely for usability and compatibility reasons. Markdown isn’t exactly user-friendly for most users, and the RCS standard doesn’t support styled text consistently across devices, which could cause formatting issues in cross-platform apps. chatech.
Google News in addition to this now allow you to edit RCS messages sent to iPhones. This is possible thanks to the new Universal Profile 3.0 standard, which adds support for message editing and end-to-end encryption. Until now, message editing was only possible between Android devices, as the original RCS support on the iPhone was based on an older version that did not support editing.
Now, when Android users send a message to someone with a device running iOS 18.5 or iOS 26 beta, they can long-press on the sent message, tap the pencil icon, and make changes. However, they will have to maxat least 15 minutes. On the iPhone side, the edited message appears as a new message with a star, because iOS doesn’t fully support RCS live editing yet. And yes, iPhone users still can’t edit RCS messages they send to Android users.
This feature appears to be in the early stages of testing and only a small number of users have access to it yet, but it’s a solid step forward nonetheless.
