New ways to learn and explore with AI Mode in Search – The Keyword

Jul 29, 2025
AI Mode is getting more helpful just in time for back to school, with Canvas for planning, Search Live with video, PDF uploads and more.
We’re introducing new features and capabilities for AI Mode in Search, just in time for the back-to-school season. Whether you’re a student, a parent or an educator — or just wrapping up a busy summer — AI Mode can help you explore complex questions and discover high-quality information from across the web. To get started today on desktop, look for the new AI Mode button on the Google homepage.
You can already use AI Mode in the Google app on Android and iOS to ask complex questions about images, and this week the same capability is launching on desktop browsers. Plus, in the coming weeks, we’re adding support for PDF uploads on desktop, so you can ask detailed questions about those documents and bring that context into your search.
For example, you could upload PDF slides from your psychology lecture and ask follow-up questions to deepen your understanding beyond the primary course materials.
Results for illustrative purposes and may vary. Available in the US and India, in English, and to users 18+.
AI Mode will analyze the contents of your file and cross-reference it with relevant information from the web to provide a helpful AI response, along with prominent links so you can dig deeper.
In the months ahead, AI Mode will support additional file types beyond PDFs and images, including files from your Google Drive.
When you’re staring down a big project or task, staying organized and keeping track of information from different places can be challenging. That’s where the new Canvas feature in AI Mode can help.
With Canvas, you can build plans and organize information over multiple sessions in a dynamic side panel that updates as you go. For example, if you want to create a study plan for an upcoming test, just ask AI Mode, then tap on the “Create Canvas” button to get started.
Results for illustrative purposes and may vary. Available in the US, in English, and to users 18+ in Labs.
Right away, AI Mode will start piecing everything together in the Canvas side panel, and you can use follow-ups to refine the output until it meets your exact requirements. Soon, the new upload feature will also make it possible to customize your study guide (or whatever you need to create) with context from your files, like class notes or a course syllabus.
No matter what you’re working on, from test prep to travel planning, you can always come back to your Canvas project and pick up where you left off.
In the coming weeks, users enrolled in the AI Mode Labs experiment in the U.S. will begin to see Canvas on desktop browsers. Just look for the “Create Canvas” option that appears when you ask for help creating or planning something.
This week, we’re rolling out Search Live with video input, bringing advanced capabilities from Project Astra directly into AI Mode. When you go Live with Search, it’s like having an expert on speed dial who can see what you see and talk through tricky concepts in real-time, all with easy access to helpful links on the web.
Search Live is fully integrated with Google Lens, our visual search tool. To get started, just open Lens in the Google app, tap the Live icon, and ask whatever’s on your mind while pointing your camera. You can have a free-flowing, back-and-forth conversation with Search in AI Mode, aided by all the visual context from your live camera feed, like different angles or objects in motion.
Search Live with video input is rolling out this week on mobile in the U.S., for users enrolled in the AI Mode Labs experiment.
With Lens in Chrome and AI Mode, you can ask and learn about what’s on your desktop screen — whether that’s a website, a PDF or anything else you’re viewing in the browser. Beginning soon, when you click on the Chrome address bar, you’ll see a new option to “Ask Google about this page” in the dropdown suggestions — another easy way to access Lens in Chrome.
Perhaps you’re looking at a geometry problem and want to better understand one of the diagrams. Click on “Ask Google about this page” from the address bar and select the diagram. You’ll get an AI Overview with a snapshot of key information directly in the side panel. And this week, you’ll be able to follow up with more questions through AI Mode, by selecting AI Mode at the top of the Lens search results or by clicking the “Dive deeper” button at the bottom of the AI Overview.
These are just some of the ways AI Mode in Search can help you learn and explore information on the web. If you’re interested in more tips for the upcoming school year, like help with back to school shopping, check out these recent updates.

GIGABYTE and TAICCA partner to address the growing demand for efficient and high-quality immersive content creation
Published: March 11, 2025
Rory Greener
This week, at the 2025 SXSW festival, alongside arts and technology, immersive technology innovator GIGABYTE announced a partnership with the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) to promote the deployment of an AI-powered XR content creation platform.
The event is famed for showcasing the latest in arts and technology, and this year at the SXSW 2025 XR Lounge, the partnership underlined the event’s reputation.
As part of the GIGABYTE/TAICCA partnership, the firms are developing AI computing technology, which will enable a new editing workflow alternative for creating XR content.
The platform supports 360 VR video editing with AI-powered enhancements, up to 8K Topaz video AI upscaling, Adobe Premiere Pro integrations, and immersive 360 VR experience storytelling features.
Moreover, GIGABYTE announced VS AI Street Fighting Arcade, a text-to-image prompt-based service for creating gaming and immersive experiences.
GIGABYTE also announced a 4K 360 VR Video Editing Workflow feature that is ready for VR professionals and promises optimized AI-powered video production.
The partnership showcases the ongoing relationship between AI and XR, with the surging AI hardware and software market helping to supercharge interest in and the ability of AR/VR/MR solutions.
Notably, the GIGABYTE announcement is supported by the firm’s deep AI hardware portfolio, combining XR content creation workflows with the aforementioned AI software optimizations and hardware innovations.
GIGABYTE AI PCs support the VR content creation workflows. These PCs include integrated hardware such as a Z790 AORUS MASTER motherboard and GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs to help drive forward GIGABYTE’s innovation solution.
Moreover, the TRX50 AERO D motherboard and GeForce RTX 4090 GAMING OC support the GIGABYTE 8 K VR video editing workflow service.
GIGABYTE says the combined hardware/software product offering demonstrates the “next evolution” of VR content creation workflows. Therefore, it boosts the abilities of XR content creators at a time when immersive media consumption is on the rise.
For example, marketing and advertising campaigns increasingly leverage XR media to provide an interactive and memorable customer outreach program to engage with new and old customers ready for a new generation of media.

Dedicated Google Maps Local Guides have a chance at a free Google Fi plan (Update: It's fake) – Android Authority

Update, July 29, 2025 (5:35 PM ET): You know what they say about things that seem too good to be true. In our original article below, we speculated that the Reddit user who posted this offer might be lying, and Google reached out to confirm that we’ve been duped.
As a commenter on the Reddit thread spotted, this is an old promo. The mischievous OP carefully cropped the bottom of the offer out of the image, which reads “Redeem by October 31, 2022,” as shown here. This explains why the dates don’t line up. Apologies if we got your hopes up. You win this round, Reddit.
Original article, July 29, 2025 (9:19 AM ET): Google Maps has a long-running Local Guides program that rewards volunteers who contribute photos, reviews, updates, and answers about places to Google Maps. The program was fairly coveted back in the day, with perks that often made people jealous (free Google Drive storage, discounts on Pixels, and even a free Nest Mini!). The rewards aren’t as exciting and frequent anymore, but there’s still a chance to come across a great perk. Case in point, this Reddit user got a free Google Fi plan for the rest of the year.
As per the email, the user can enjoy any Unlimited plan at no cost for three months, up to a value of $195. The email’s wording is a bit off, as we’re still in July, so three months do not cover the rest of the year. This discrepancy can be explained by the fact that this isn’t a new perk, as it has been around for a few years now. Users are usually offered this around October, and it seems Google didn’t update the language on the email this time around. Alternatively, there’s always the possibility that the user is lying, and this is an old email, in which case, we’ve been bamboozled.
The fine print isn’t visible in this email, but we know from previous rollouts that the offer is limited to first-time Fi customers who decide to port their number in from their existing carrier. This caveat substantially dulls the deal, but if you were planning to give Google Fi a shot, getting a perk worth $195 is a pretty sweet way to start it off.
It’s still unclear what criteria Google uses to give out this perk. You do need to have some level of Local Guides contribution, at least above level four, as that is when you get the first perk: a custom badge on your Google Maps profile. But beyond that, it’s in the air. Users at levels as high as seven haven’t received this perk yet, and it’s not yet known what the user’s level was who received this perk this week.
If you’ve ever received this free Google Fi perk for being an active Google Maps Local Guide, let us know your level in the comments below!

Google fixing ‘Failed’ Play system update on Android 16 – 9to5Google

Google is aware of how some devices, including Pixel, on Android 16 and 16 QPR1 are failing to install Play system updates.
This issue was acknowledged today on the Pixel and Android Community forums. It involves a “Failed to update” error when going to Settings > Security & privacy > System & updates > Google Play system update. Tapping “Try again” fails, with this emerging as a problem in recent weeks.
This impacts “some devices running Android 16 and Android 16 beta.” In our example, a Pixel phone is still on the May 1, 2025 Google Play system update in July. That said, most of our devices are not seeing any issues.
Google says “there is no need to factory reset your device.” It has “identified a fix” and will “roll it out to users in an upcoming Google Play system update.”
As far as we can tell, this Google Play system update gap has not resulted in any missing features.

Google confirms Android Earthquake Alerts partially failed during deadly 2023 quake in Turkey – 9to5Google

Google has confirmed that its Android Earthquake Alerts system experienced issues in the wake of the 2023 earthquake that rocked Turkey and nearby regions.
Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts system leverages the sensors in Android phones to detect the early signs of an earthquake, providing alert to users when major quakes are coming before their effects are felt. While the system can usually only provide a few seconds of warning, that can be incredibly valuable in major quakes.
In early 2023, though, the system seemingly didn’t kick in during the major quake that rocked Turkey. It was reported in the months following the quake that users never saw these alerts, despite the region being comprised of nearly 80% Android users. Google, at the time, said that it was “confident” the system had worked correctly. That 7.8 magnitude quake led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, largely due to collapsing buildings.
Now, Google is confirming that its Android Earthquake Alerts system failed to properly alert users of the Turkey quake.
Speaking to the BBC, Google says that its system partially failed. Earthquake alerts have two different forms. For quakes with lower impact, a notification is sent alongside other warnings. But for major quakes, the system sends a fullscreen notification with audible alerts and overrides user settings such as Do Not Disturb. In the Turkey earthquake, Android’s system sent lower-level “BeAware” warnings to around half a million users, and the full “TakeAction” alerts to a mere 469 people. The report estimates that the system could have sent alerts to “10 million people within 98 miles of the epicenter” of the earthquake.
What went wrong? Google apparently cites “limitations to the detection algorithms,” with the company also confirming that the system did work properly on later aftershocks. Later the same day, the system sent “8,158” high level alerts to users, with “just under four million” users. In a later simulation of the initial quake, the system would have sent high-level alerts to 10 million users, and 67 million lower level alerts to those further from the epicenter.
Google recently published a deeper study regarding the Android Earthquake Alerts system, noting the “challenge of estimating an earthquake’s power.” That study, along with a further paper published to Science, doesn’t address the failure in Turkey.
In the study, though, Google says that it continues to learn from user feedback as the system continues to function, with some “key takeaways” including:

You should really get your Pixel 6a battery replaced, or get a new phone – 9to5Google

Pixel 6a owners are feeling the effects of the recent battery reduction update from Google, and while the phone is technically still usable on that update, users should still take action soon to fix their device, whether that means getting the battery replaced or getting a new phone altogether.
The Pixel 6a has been an excellent phone for those who purchased it, but issues with the batteries inside of some units have led to Google taking measures to ensure user safety. In some cases, these batteries can overheat and can be at risk of a fire, as has happened to a handful of users so far.
The most recent report of a Pixel 6a catching fire surfaced on Reddit over the weekend, with the user’s Pixel 6a overheating and catching fire while charging overnight. The user notes that their phone had already been updated with Google’s battery reduction. While Google’s mitigation does lessen the risk quite a bit, the batteries themselves still have issues, and it’s clear that users should take action.
Google’s options for fixing this problem boil down to a credit towards a new phone (whether cash or a store credit), or a free battery replacement. The latter is probably the best option for many, as the battery replacement is not only free, but breathes new life into the device. Users have reported that their battery life increases dramatically following the replacement. But if you were already considering a new device, replacing the phone is a good option as well. Between a $150 credit and a $75 trade-in value, the cost to upgrade from a Pixel 6a to a Pixel 9a comes out to around $275. You could also take the $100 cash payment and an $88 trade-in from Samsung to get a Galaxy A36 for just over $200.
Do you still use a Pixel 6a?
