Google June 2025 Core Update Rolling Out – Search Engine Roundtable

Google Core Update
Google officially announced the rollout of the June 2025 core update yesterday at around 10:37 am ET. This core update is expected to take about three weeks to roll out. Google said this “is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites.”
Most core updates take about two weeks to roll out but Google has had core updates that take one week, had that take three weeks and had that take over four weeks. The following morning, I am not seeing huge signs that this has rolled out in an impactful way – but don’t get your hopes up, we might see the larger impact this update tomorrow or in the coming days. But so far, the morning after, it is not that impactful. I will continue to track this update and update you on any changes as it rolls out over the next few weeks.

Today we released the June 2025 core update. We’ll update our ranking release history page when the rollout is complete: https://t.co/bOclYyVtYH
This one does not mention “work to surface more content from creators through a series of improvements throughout this year” like they mentioned in the March 2025 core update. I should note that whatever happened this past Saturday was big but I highly doubt Google would say it is related to this June 2025 core update.
I am surprised this is the second core update we had of 2025, I was expecting more core updates, more often but that did not happen

Google June 2025 Core Update Quick Facts

Here are the most important things that we know right now in short form:

  • Name: Google June 2025 Broad Core Update
  • Launched: June 30, 2025 at around 10:37 am ET
  • Rollout: Will take about three weeks to roll out
  • Targets: It looks at all types of content
  • Penalty: It is not a penalty, it promotes or rewards great web pages
  • Global: This is a global update impacting all regions, in all languages.
  • Impact: The normal core update – updating some of the “core systems”. Google said this June update is a “regular update.”
  • Discover: Core updates impact Google Discover and other features, also feature snippets and more.
  • Recover: If you were hit by this, then you will need to look at your content and see if you can do better with Google’s core update advice.
  • Refreshes: Google will do periodic refreshes to this algorithm but may not communicate those updates in the future. Maybe this is what we saw the past couple of weeks or all those unconfirmed Google updates.

Google June 2025 Core Update Details

There doesn’t seem much unique to this update outside of it taking three weeks, versus the typical two weeks.
And also this line, “This is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites.” That line makes it sound not super unique and just a normal core update.
John Mueller from Google said this is a “bigger Google Search updates,” I mean, all core updates are, but he said this on Bluesky.

Here is a short video I made on this core update – it is super YouTube style:

Previous Broad Core Updates

Here is a list of the most recent core updates we’ve seen since Google started to confirm them. Previously we nicknamed them Phantom updates or unconfirmed updates.

Previous Helpful Content Update Impact

Here is the list of the previous Google helpful content updates:

Recent Unconfirmed Google Updates

While we didn’t see more core updates, more often, we did have a lot of unconfirmed updates including a big one this Saturday, June 28th. Then before that June 25 and 26th, then June 18th and then June 9th and then June 4th, May 29th, May 21st, May 16th, then May 12 and 13, May 8th (I didn’t cover May 1st, I probably should have) but then it was a couple of weeks, not since April 25th and then before that, 22nd and 23rd volatility and then around April 16th and then before that around April 9th.

SEO Chatter on the June 2025 Core Update

Here is some of the early chatter, just keep in mind, folks think that it started with the Saturday update but I suspect Google would deny that. Overall the chatter is not at core update levels – at least not yet. It is still early. Over on WebmasterWorld, Black Hat World and this site – here is what I am hearing:

Wow, they announce an ”update” now? One could argue that there has been something happening every day since end of May. So, from the looks of things, the entirety of both June and July are screwed. Nice work G.
Would be nice if this announcement was a late one regarding June. Not going into July.

So far my traffic has been improving nicely. Waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was out of the country for 6 weeks and didnt pay attention to my site, didnt look at analytics or SEM or ranking. Gosh that was nice.
We are clearly in recession here in USA, despite the surging (manipulated) stock market. I haven’t seen a single customer since the 24th and my vendors are also reporting that business is stone dead. We know who to thank for that…

Here we go. I was surprised they announced this as I thought they had gone silent on the core updates. Good luck, everyone.

What I notice is a lot of video shorts pushed into the search results with this update, and a slight shuffle which interestingly brought back a tiny bit from some sites I knew in the old days on some topics.

This ain’t going to help me anyway. Business is dead already. I am just thinking how to make money other ways. maybe I will do AI slop like everyone else. Though I am sure at some point they will tag that as spam too!

Noticed slight drops on some affiliate pages. Looks like topical relevance and fresh content are key in this update. Monitoring further.

It’s still early, but I’ve noticed slight fluctuations in rankings for some high-competition keywords – mostly in industries with E-E-A-T emphasis.
If you’ve been focusing on quality content, good backlinks, and user experience, you should be fine. Core updates usually reward sites that align with Google’s guidelines. Keep monitoring and adjust if needed.

Noticed a 20% traffic drop on one of my authority sites. Waiting for the dust to settle.

We are seeing a little drop in traffic but a huge drop in conversions. That is something that is now common within updates. Conversions vanish directly with the start and bots from all over the world eating up our server power.

I’m only seeing this in three niches at the moment, so it’s probably just a coincidence. However, I’ve just noticed that many of the URLs listed by Google lead to 404 pages. However, since the update has only just started (Friday), everything is constantly changing at the moment.

Interesting, “The rollout may take up to 3 weeks to roll out…” Usually it’s two. Maybe we can find out why. :) pic.twitter.com/GkyLMtSC3k

Finally.. @seroundtable readers already knew that 🤝

Please, I pray my traffic returns 🙏🏽😫 https://t.co/3TJtdJVy7L

Been waiting to see when Google would stick the knife in for the final blow… 😆

Good luck all. https://t.co/JWG0xmkMe3
So what are you all seeing with this update so far?

Netflix Adopts Runway AI for Video Content Creation, Driving Industry Shift – AInvest

News/
Articles/
Articles Details
Stay ahead with the latest US stock market happenings.
Netflix has begun using Runway AI’s video generation software for content creation, marking a significant move into the AI-driven film and television production landscape. This development comes amidst ongoing debates within the industry about the implications of AI technology on traditional production methods. The streaming giant is leveraging Runway AI’s tools to enhance its video content, a step that underscores the growing trend of integrating artificial intelligence into entertainment production.
The adoption of Runway AI’s technology by Netflix is part of a broader shift in the industry towards embracing new technologies to stay competitive and meet the evolving demands of audiences. The software allows for the generation of high-quality video content, which can supplement or even replace traditional filming methods. This move by Netflix highlights the potential of AI to streamline production processes and create innovative content, driving efficiency and cost savings.
However, the use of AI in film and television production is not without controversy. Critics argue that the reliance on AI could lead to job losses in the industry, as certain roles traditionally performed by humans may become automated. There are also concerns about the potential for AI-generated content to lack the authenticity and creativity that human artists bring to the table. Despite these reservations, the potential benefits of AI in terms of efficiency and cost savings are driving its adoption by major players like Netflix.
The integration of AI into the entertainment industry is expected to have far-reaching implications. As more companies follow Netflix’s lead and adopt AI technologies, the landscape of film and television production is likely to undergo significant changes. This could include the development of new job roles focused on AI management and content creation, as well as the emergence of hybrid production methods that combine traditional techniques with AI-generated elements.
In addition to Netflix, other major players in the industry are also exploring the use of AI. Disney has been testing Runway’s technology and discussing its potential applications, although it has not yet integrated the software into its content production line. The company has also faced legal challenges related to AI, such as a recent lawsuit against another AI video startup, Midjourney, over copyright issues. Despite these challenges, the potential for AI to enhance special effects and reduce production costs is undeniable.
Runway AI is not the only player in the AI video generation space. The company is competing with other tech giants like OpenAI and Google, as well as numerous startups. Runway’s AI video generation model, released earlier this year, initially gained attention for its ability to generate short, slightly choppy video clips based on text prompts. Since then, the technology has significantly improved, and the company has partnered with Lionsgate Studios to train AI models based on their film and television content for use in movie projects.
Runway AI has secured a total of 545 million dollars in funding, with a recent 308 million dollar funding round pushing its valuation over 3 billion dollars. The company is rapidly expanding into the animation and special effects sectors, with the recent launch of its Act-Two AI model aimed at simplifying the traditionally cumbersome, expensive, and time-consuming motion capture process. This model works in conjunction with Runway’s flagship Gen-4 system to map human motion videos onto animated characters.
Other AI startups are also making inroads into the entertainment industry. OpenAI, for instance, has been in discussions with major studios like Disney about its AI video generator, Sora. While some filmmakers have shown interest in the product, OpenAI has yet to announce any major commercial partnerships. The ongoing exploration and adoption of AI technologies by industry leaders indicate a growing acceptance of AI’s role in shaping the future of film and television production.

Google Maps just made controlling your music a navigation nightmare (Updated: Working on a fix) – Android Authority

Update, July 22, 2025 (02:44 AM ET): A Google spokesperson has shared the following statement for this issue:
The statement confirms that the disappearing media controls are just a bug, and Google is working on a fix to bring them back. There’s no ETA on when this will be fixed, but at least the company has acknowledged the issue and confirmed a fix is in the works.
Original article, July 21, 2025 (07:58 AM ET): Google Maps remains one of the best apps for Android devices, but it’s not perfect. There are plenty of ways Google can improve the Maps experience, and a good starting step is to keep features that users use and not remove them, especially if replacement functionality isn’t available. The latest change to Google Maps makes it significantly difficult to control your music while navigating, and it’s pretty infuriating.
As spotted by 9to5Google, Google Maps v25.28 stable as well as Maps v25.29 beta has removed the media playback controls that appeared at the bottom of the app when navigating.
The media controls were a swipe away at the bottom, and you could easily control playback from here. Users could also tap the Browse button for nine quick suggestions to switch to quickly. If you needed more options, there was a handy shortcut to quickly open the music app. If you needed more screen real estate, you could swipe down the controls to move them out of the way again.
These handy media control shortcuts had to be enabled within Google Maps’ Settings > Navigation > Show media playback controls. This feature worked with YouTube Music and Spotify, and you could also select your default media app. However, the new Google Maps update on both stable and beta channels has removed all of this.
This feature was my default way to control music playback while navigating. While there are other external ways to control playback, having the control right on the navigation screen was super convenient as it minimized distractions and taps needed to simply change a song. Now, you have to swap out to your music player app or use the active media player notification in the notification panel to control playback, meaning you have to navigate away from the Maps screen and, worse, be distracted for a few more seconds while driving.
It’s not immediately clear if this removal is intentional or just a bug, but the feature remains present on Google Maps for iOS, for what it’s worth.
We’ve contacted Google to learn more about the removal of media playback controls from Google Maps. We’ll keep you updated when we learn more.

Google's June 2025 core update brings dramatic ranking changes in 16 days – PPC Land

Major algorithm update completed July 17 shows HCU recovery patterns and AI Overview impact across verticals.
Google completed its June 2025 core update on July 17, marking the end of one of the most significant algorithm adjustments in recent months. According to the Google Search Status Dashboard, the update required 16 days to fully implement after beginning on June 30. Industry experts documented extensive ranking volatility affecting websites globally throughout the rollout period.
The June update represented Google’s second major core algorithm change of 2025. Multiple tracking platforms detected substantial ranking movements beginning July 2, approximately 48 hours after the initial announcement. According to Glenn Gabe, a prominent SEO analyst who tracked the update’s progress through daily social media posts, “This was a red-hot update that rolled out on June 30 right before the July 4 holiday weekend.”

Sites severely impacted by the September 2023 Helpful Content Update experienced their first significant ranking improvements in nearly two years. Gabe documented recovery patterns across a tracked list of 400 websites that were “obliterated” by the original HCU implementation.
“Sites that were obliterated by the September 2023 Helpful Content Update (HCUX) finally started surging back,” Gabe noted in his analysis. “And some were surging back from the dead (literally back from no visibility at all).”
Recovery patterns emerged primarily between July 8-9, several days after initial ranking movements from the June update began. This timing indicates Google updated specific systems during the core update implementation rather than at the beginning of the rollout period.
The recovered sites showed varying degrees of improvement. “Many aren’t back to where they were before September 2023, but there are some full (or near-full) recoveries in the mix,” according to Gabe’s tracking data. However, not all previously impacted sites benefited from the June adjustments, with some experiencing additional ranking declines.
Websites experiencing negative core update effects simultaneously saw reduced visibility in AI Overviews. According to Gabe’s analysis, “sites negatively impacted by the June core update saw visibility in AI Overviews drop as well.” This correlation demonstrates how Google’s core ranking systems influence multiple search surfaces.
The connection extends beyond traditional web search results. “Broad core updates can impact all Google surfaces, including web search, image search, video search, Google News, top stories, the News tab in Search, and Google Discover,” Gabe explained. AI Overviews and AI Mode function within Google’s “Web Search” framework and rely on the same core quality systems affected by broad updates.
Several publishers reported decreased clicks and impressions in Google Discover concurrent with core update implementation. This pattern aligns with Gabe’s warning about maintaining search quality: “DO NOT ignore Google Search and let quality drop. If you do, then you leave your site susceptible to impact from a broad core update.”
Significant ranking fluctuations occurred throughout early and mid-June before the official core update announcement. According to Gabe’s analysis, many websites previously affected by reviews updates experienced substantial movement during this period.
“Based on my analysis, I believe Google could have pushed a big reviews system update behind the scenes,” Gabe concluded after examining pre-update volatility patterns. Google has maintained since April 2023 that reviews system updates would occur “on a regular and ongoing basis” without individual announcements.
The pre-update movement contradicts assumptions that core updates begin only when announced. Google representatives have clarified that broad core updates commence when officially announced, while smaller system updates can occur independently with significant impact potential.
Your Money or Your Life content categories experienced particularly high volatility during the June update. Health, medical, finance, and legal websites demonstrated substantial ranking changes throughout the implementation period.
“Sites containing YMYL content can always see a lot of volatility during broad core updates, but I saw a ton of volatility with the June core update,” Gabe observed. These content categories face algorithmic scrutiny due to their potential impact on user welfare and financial decisions.
Google evaluates YMYL sites using enhanced quality standards that extend beyond content creation. “Remember, ‘quality’ is more than just content,” according to Gabe’s analysis. “Google has explained it’s about content, the user experience, how things are presented, and more.”
The evaluation process incorporates Navboost, Google’s system tracking 13 months of user interaction signals. This technology enables Google to distinguish between satisfied and dissatisfied users based on behavioral patterns rather than content analysis alone.
Some websites achieved recovery from March 2025 core update impacts during the June rollout. According to Gabe’s analysis, dramatic improvements occurred for sites that successfully moved beyond unclear quality signals.
“You want to get clearly out of the gray area from a quality perspective,” Gabe explained regarding long-term ranking stability. “If not, then you can see surges and drops with every core update.”
Sites remaining in algorithmic gray areas face continued volatility as Google adjusts system parameters. When search engineers modify ranking dial settings, websites with ambiguous quality signals can experience significant movement in either direction.
The recovery timeline requires patience and sustained improvement efforts. “You will typically need another broad core update to see recovery so focus on long-term improvements,” Gabe recommended for affected site owners.
The June update required longer implementation than initially projected. Google specified the rollout could take up to three weeks but completed the process in exactly 16 days and 18 hours. This timeline represents typical duration for major core updates affecting multiple ranking systems simultaneously.
Industry tracking tools including Semrush, Advanced Web Rankings, Mozcast, Sistrix, Cognitive SEO, SimilarWeb, Accuranker, Mangools, Wincher, Data For SEO, SERPstat, and Algoroo documented volatility patterns throughout the implementation period.
Not all websites experienced traffic decoupling between clicks and impressions. Some sites in specific niches maintained traditional correlation patterns where AI Overviews trigger infrequently, preserving normal click-through relationships.
The June 2025 core update reinforces Google’s emphasis on comprehensive quality evaluation rather than isolated ranking factors. According to previous PPC Land analysis, brand authority signals may influence algorithmic assessment more than previously understood.
Recovery strategies must address multiple quality dimensions simultaneously. The “kitchen sink” approach involves improving content quality, user experience, advertising implementation, affiliate practices, and technical SEO problems. This comprehensive methodology aligns with Google’s stated preferences for holistic site improvements.
The update timing suggests Google will continue implementing core adjustments throughout 2025. “I do believe we’ll see another core update, or two, in the fall,” Gabe predicted based on historical patterns and current implementation frequency.
Marketing professionals should prepare for continued algorithmic refinements affecting multiple search surfaces. The integration between core ranking systems and AI Overview visibility requires optimization strategies addressing both traditional search results and emerging search formats.

Core Update: A core update represents a significant modification to Google’s fundamental ranking algorithms that affects how websites are evaluated and positioned in search results. These updates differ from the thousands of minor adjustments Google implements daily because they modify the essential systems that determine search rankings. Core updates typically occur every few months and require public announcement due to their broad impact across multiple industries and website types. The changes affect how Google interprets content quality, relevance, and authority signals.
Helpful Content Update (HCU): The Helpful Content Update, first announced by Google in August 2022, was initially described as a sitewide signal designed to evaluate content helpfulness on a document level. The September 2023 implementation severely impacted numerous websites, with many sites experiencing dramatic traffic losses that persisted for nearly two years. The system was later integrated into Google’s core ranking infrastructure during the March 2024 core update, removing the standalone HCU classifier while maintaining its evaluation criteria within broader algorithmic assessments.
YMYL (Your Money or Your Life): YMYL content encompasses topics that could significantly impact a person’s health, financial stability, safety, or happiness. These categories include health and medical information, financial advice, legal guidance, news about important topics, and safety information. Google applies heightened quality standards to YMYL content due to its potential consequences for users’ wellbeing. Sites focusing on YMYL topics face more stringent algorithmic evaluation and require demonstrated expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness to maintain strong search visibility.
AI Overviews: AI Overviews represent Google’s artificial intelligence-powered summaries that appear directly in search results, providing comprehensive answers to user queries without requiring clicks to source websites. These features operate within Google’s Web Search framework and rely on the same core quality and ranking systems affected by broad core updates. The integration means that websites experiencing core update impacts will see corresponding changes in AI Overview visibility, creating additional traffic implications beyond traditional search result positioning.
Ranking Volatility: Ranking volatility refers to significant fluctuations in website positions within search results during algorithm updates or system changes. Industry tracking tools measure these movements across millions of keywords to identify when Google implements algorithmic adjustments. High volatility periods indicate substantial ranking redistributions affecting multiple websites simultaneously, often serving as early indicators of core update implementations before official announcements from Google.
Search Visibility: Search visibility represents a website’s overall presence and prominence within search engine results pages across its target keywords and topics. This metric encompasses ranking positions, featured snippet appearances, and presence in specialized search features like image search, video results, and news sections. Changes in search visibility during core updates indicate how algorithmic adjustments affect a site’s capacity to attract organic traffic from search engines.
Recovery Patterns: Recovery patterns describe the specific ways websites regain search rankings and traffic following negative impacts from algorithm updates. These patterns vary significantly between different types of sites and update categories, with some websites achieving partial recovery while others experience complete restoration or continued decline. Understanding recovery patterns helps SEO professionals develop appropriate remediation strategies and set realistic expectations for improvement timelines.
Algorithmic Gray Areas: Algorithmic gray areas represent ambiguous quality zones where websites fail to clearly signal their value to Google’s ranking systems. Sites operating in these zones experience continued volatility with each core update as algorithmic adjustments can push them toward either positive or negative ranking changes. Escaping gray areas requires comprehensive quality improvements that clearly demonstrate content value, user satisfaction, and topical expertise to achieve stable long-term rankings.
Quality Signals: Quality signals encompass the various indicators Google’s algorithms use to assess website and content value, including user experience metrics, content depth and accuracy, author expertise, site authority, and behavioral data. These signals extend beyond traditional SEO factors to include user interaction patterns tracked through systems like Navboost, which monitors 13 months of user behavior data. The complexity and interconnection of quality signals require holistic optimization approaches rather than isolated tactical improvements.
System Updates: System updates refer to modifications Google makes to specific components within its broader ranking infrastructure, often occurring independently of announced core updates. These adjustments can significantly impact certain website categories or content types while remaining largely invisible to the broader SEO community. The reviews system update suspected during early June 2025 exemplifies how Google continuously refines individual algorithmic components without public announcement, creating ranking changes that may be attributed to other factors.

Who: Google implemented the June 2025 core update affecting website owners, SEO professionals, and digital marketers globally, with analysis provided by industry experts including Glenn Gabe, Barry Schwartz, and Marie Haynes.
What: The June 2025 core update represents Google’s second major algorithm adjustment of 2025, causing significant ranking volatility across websites and industries while enabling partial recovery for sites previously impacted by the September 2023 Helpful Content Update.
When: The update began rolling out on June 30, 2025, at 07:30 US Pacific time, with completion occurring on July 17, 2025, at 01:00 Pacific time after exactly 16 days and 18 hours of implementation.
Where: The algorithmic changes affected search results globally, with tracking tools detecting impacts across multiple languages, geographic regions, and Google surfaces including web search, image search, video search, Google News, and AI Overviews.
Why: According to Google’s standard position, core updates aim to improve search result quality and better surface relevant content, though the June update specifically demonstrated adjustments to systems evaluating content helpfulness and enabled recovery for sites previously caught in algorithmic gray areas.
