Google Search confirms it’s requiring JavaScript to block bots and scrapers, like SEO Tools
Google has made a change to how it’s search results are served which will also help to secure it against bots and scrapers. Whether this will have further effect on SEO Tools or if they can use a headless Chrome that uses JavaScript remains an open question at the moment but it’s likely that Google is using rate limiting to throttle how many pages can be requested within a set period of time.
Ryan Jones’ (LinkedIn profile) SERPrecon is back up and running, according to a tweet:
“Good news. We are back up and running. Thanks for bearing with us.”
SERPrecon enables users to compare search results against competitors over time as well as competitor comparisons using “vectors, machine learning and natural language processing.” Quite likely one of the more useful SEO tools available and reasonably priced, too.
Google quietly updated their search box to require all users, including bots, to have JavaScript turned on when searching.

The browser you’re using has JavaScript turned off. To continue your search, turn it on.
In an email to TechCrunch a Google spokesperson shared the following details:
“Enabling JavaScript allows us to better protect our services and users from bots and evolving forms of abuse and spam, …and to provide the most relevant and up-to-date information.”
JavaScript possibly enables personalization in the search experience, which is what that spokesperson may mean by providing the most relevant information. But JavaScript can also be used for blocking bots.
Using the latest version of Chrome I copied some of the JavaScript via Chrome Dev Tools and ran it through ChatGPT to ask what it does. One part of it may relate to restricting abusive requests for documents.
ChatGPT gave me the following feedback:
“Core Functionalities
Randomized Value Generation (rdb)
Generates a random value based on properties (D_d, idc, and p4b) of the input object a, constrained by p7d.
This may be used for rate-limiting, exponential backoff, or similar logic.
Purpose and Context
From its components, the script:
Likely handles request retries or access control for web resources.
Implements a policy enforcement system, where:
Policies determine if requests are valid.
Errors are logged and sometimes retried based on rules.
Randomized delays or limits might control the retry mechanism.
Appears optimized for error handling and resilience in distributed or high-traffic systems, possibly within a Google service or API.”
ChatGPT said that the code may use rate-limiting which is a way to limit the number of actions a user or a system can take within a specific time period.
Used to enforce a limit on the number of actions (e.g., API requests) a user or system can perform within a specific time frame.
In this code, the random values generated by rdb could be used to introduce variability in when or how often requests are allowed, helping to manage traffic effectively.
ChatGPT explained that exponential backoff is a way to limit the amount of retries for a failed action a user or system is allowed to make. The time period between retries for a failed action increases exponentially.
ChatGPT explained that random value generation could be used to manage access to resources to prevent abusive requests.
I don’t know for certain that this is what that specific JavaScript is doing, that’s what ChatGPT explained and it definitely matches the information that Google shared that they are using JavaScript as part of their strategy for blocking bots.
Semrush Says It was Never Affected
Semrush commented on a LinkedIn discussion that a delay that was seen was due to maintenance and didn’t have anything to do with Google’s JavaScript requirement.
They wrote:
“Hi Natalia Witczyk, the delay you saw yesterday was due to general maintenance within our Position Tracking tool, we are not experiencing any issues related to the event with Google but will continue to monitor the situation. We’d recommend refreshing your project, if you are still having issues please send us a DM or reach out to our support…”
One of the observations made by search marketers across social media is that dealing with the blocks may cause an increase in resources for crawling which in turn may be passed on to users in the form of rate increases.
Vahan Petrosyan, Director of Technology at Search Engine Journal observed:
“Scraping Google with JavaScript requires more computing power. You often need a headless browser to render pages. That adds extra steps, and it increases hosting costs. The process is also slower because you have to wait for JavaScript to load. Google may detect such activity more easily, so it can be harder to avoid blocks. These factors make it expensive and complicated for SEO tools to simply “turn on” JavaScript.”

Google is blocking search result scraping, causing global outages at rank and keyword tracking services
Google cracked down on web scrapers that harvest search results data, triggering global outages at many popular rank tracking tools like Semrush that depend on providing fresh data from search results pages.
What happens if Google’s SERPs are completely blocked? A certain amount of data provided by tracking services have long been extrapolated by algorithms from a variety of data sources. It’s possible that one way around the current block is to extrapolate the data from other sources.
What Google is doing is still having a major effect on the freshness of data that SEO tools are able to deliver. There are many SEO tools that are experiencing outages to data that can normally be obtained through scraping Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs).
@RyanJones, who operates several tools, tweeted an update today:
“Definitely affecting my tools as well – as we use a 3rd party data supplier and ALL the major ones were blocked yesterday. Many still are”
@seovision tweeted observations in Spanish (translated below) using a Spanish colloquialism to describe Google as a dog guarding vegetables it won’t eat, blocking the gardener who wants them and leaving the resource inaccessible to everyone.
“Since yesterday it seems that they have put in place a new anti-scraping system also in SERPs, which is stricter. They are getting very tough on scraping. …Like the gardener’s dog, I won’t sell you the data or let you get it.”
Semrush is likely the most used tool whose data has not been refreshed (according to posts online). That said, someone from Semrush contacted me to say that nothing unusual is going on and that there are no widespread issues.
Popular SEO tool, SE Ranking, is another service that’s experiencing a loss of fresh data.
@LauraChiocciora posted a screenshot of a message received from the SE Ranking tool indicating that position tracking is back online but that SERP Features is still missing because of “technical issues.”
The full message in the screenshot is:
“Position tracking is back online. SERP Features tracking is still not available due to technical issues. Our team is already working on resolving the problem and providing you with the data as soon as possible.”
Google’s guidelines have long prohibited automated rank checking in the search results but apparently Google has also allowed many companies to scrape their search results and charge for accessing ranking data for the purposes of tracking keywords and rankings.
According to Google’s guidelines:
“Machine-generated traffic (also called automated traffic) refers to the practice of sending automated queries to Google. This includes scraping results for rank-checking purposes or other types of automated access to Google Search conducted without express permission. Machine-generated traffic consumes resources and interferes with our ability to best serve users. Such activities violate our spam policies and the Google Terms of Service.”

It’s highly resource intensive to block scrapers, especially because they can respond to blocks by doing things like changing their IP address and user agent to get by any blocks. Another way to block scrapers is through targeting specific behaviors like how many pages are requested by a user. Excessive amounts of page requests can trigger a block. The problem to that approach is that it can become resource intensive keeping track of all the blocked IP addresses which can quickly number in the millions.
A post in the private SEO Signals Lab Facebook Group announced that Google was striking hard against web scrapers, with one member commenting that the Scrape Owl tool wasn’t working for them while others cited that Semrush’s data has not updated.
Another post, this time on LinkedIn, noted multiple tools that weren’t refreshing their content but it also noted that the blocking hasn’t affected all data providers, noting that Sistrix and MonitorRank were still working. Someone from a company called HaloScan reported that they made adjustments to resume scraping data from Google and have recovered and someone else reported that another tool called MyRankingMetrics is still reporting data.
So whatever Google is doing it’s not currently affecting all scrapers. It may be that Google is targeting certain scraping behavior, learning from the responses and improving their blocking ability. The coming weeks may reveal that Google is improving its ability to block scrapers or it’s only targeting the biggest ones.
Another post on LinkedIn provided insights about the impact, including speculating how the blocking could eventually result in higher resources and fees charged to end users of SaaS SEO tools.
Natalia Witczyk (LinkedIn profile) offered the following insights via LinkedIn:
“Fresh in: Google starts intensifying its anti-scraping measures, introducing stricter protections such as IP blocking and CAPTCHAs. Popular SEO tools like Semrush, SE Ranking are being impacted.
This move from Google is making data extraction more challenging and costly. As a result, users may face higher subscription fees.
Any of you seeing data issues in your SEO tools?
EDIT: Ahrefs claims no outages, so I have removed their name from the first paragraph, however some users reported data lags. Sistrix seem unaffected.”
Ryan Jones tweeted:
“Google seems to have made an update last night that blocks most scrapers and many APIs.
Google, just give us a paid API for search results. we’ll pay you instead.”
So far there has not been any announcement by Google but it may be that the chatter online may force someone at Google to consider making a statement.

I/O will showcase product announcements from across Google’s portfolio. We’re looking forward to plenty of news relating to Android, Chrome, Google Search, YouTube, and — of course — Google’s AI-powered chatbot, Gemini.

It’s time to close up the live updates shop.
Yes, there was a lot announced today, although many could be housed under the “AI improvements” category. You can read everything that was announced at Google I/O 2025 here. The mood was upbeat and the crowd — per reporter Maxwell Zeff’s view — was most interested in the AI Mode rollout. What’s AI Mode? You can read about it here.
Here’s what is on tap for tomorrow. Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov is scheduled to talk. No word on what Dolgov will talk about but he’ll surely mention this milestone that was posted on X today: Waymo has now officially served over 10 million fully autonomous paid rides — doubling its total from the end of last year.
Tomorrow’s I/O agenda is packed, including sessions covering Google’s Gemma family of open AI models, Google Workspace, and Android development tools. We’re expecting lots of demos, as well as possibly a few surprises that weren’t announced during the Tuesday keynotes.
Google launched a new series of AI models in its Gemma collection at Google I/O. Gemma models are “open” in the sense that developers can build apps on top of them and fine-tune them, including offline.
Gemma 3n is a general-purpose model that can handle audio, text, images, and videos, and run on devices with as little as 2GB of RAM. MedGemma can analyze health-related text and images. As for SignGemma, it can translate sign language to spoken-language text; Google says it’s best at American Sign Language and English.
Consumer features might’ve gotten most of the focus at Google I/O’s day-one keynote, but Google highlighted a few developer tools and platform updates as well.
Google’s Colab, a notebooking tool for AI applications, now has a built-in AI “agent” that can perform certain actions, like fixing errors and transforming code. Meanwhile, Gemini Code Assist, Google’s AI coding assistant, entered general availability. And Google rolled out a new API, Computer Use API, that lets developers build applications that can browse the web or use other software tools.
Google says that it’s teaming up with Darren Aronofsky, the filmmaker behind “The Whale” and “The Fountain,” to experiment with generative AI tools for movie making.
We’re teaming up with @PrimordialSoup_, a new venture by visionary director @DarrenAronofsky, to redefine AI’s role in filmmaking and put artists in control of technological innovation.

Aronofsky’s new venture, Primordial Soup, has produced a live-action film that integrates footage generated by Google’s Veo video model. The film, “Ancestra,” was directed by Eliza McNitt and will premiere at the Tribeca Festival in June.
During the Google I/O keynote this morning, Google CEO Sundar Pichai mentioned that AI usage across Google’s products and services climbed from 9.7 trillion tokens in April 2024 to more than 480 trillion tokens in April 2025, a 50x increase.

Tokens are the raw bits of data that AI models work with, with a million tokens being equivalent to about 750,000 words (roughly 163,000 words longer than “War and Peace”).
Two hours. Yes, two hours to try the Android-based XR glasses at Google I/O 2025, at least that is according to boots-on-the-ground reporter Maxwell Zeff.
In case you missed it, we have the full story on the XR glasses, which is Google going after Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Google launched the Android XR platform with Qualcomm and Samsung last year. Today, the company provided more detail, had a few live demos, and announced new partnerships with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to create smart glasses based on Android XR.
The update to Wear OS 6 is, perhaps, one of the announcements you might have missed.
The upshot: Google gave Wear OS 6 a design makeover with Material 3 Expressive, the design language the company unveiled earlier this month.
Reporter Ivan Mehta has the details in this story, but here’s the TL;DR: Google released the developer preview of Wear OS 6, which is based on Android 16, for testing. The aim of the makeover is to make apps look more cohesive, so app tiles will adopt the default system font, among other improvements.
Word from folks “in the know” is that Waymo has a booth at the Google I/O 2025 conference and is giving out tickets to ride in the company’s robotaxis in its Silicon Valley territory. Waymo just received approval from California regulators that allows them to expand that service area. The expansion hasn’t happened yet, but it does allow Waymo to offer robotaxi rides in more Silicon Valley cities, including most of San Jose.
Here’s another item you might have missed.
App developers who build for Google’s TV platform, Google TV, can now use an updated version of the In-App Ratings and Reviews API to prompt viewers to leave a rating and review for a piece of content, like a TV show or movie. The feature allows users to see the rating averages, browse reviews, and leave their own reviews directly from the app store listing page on Google TV.
There was so much packed into the Google I/O 2025 keynote that we missed a few items. For instance, toward the end of the keynote, Sundar Pichai said Google is building a constellation of satellites to detect natural calamities.
“Together with an amazing group of partners, we are building something called Fire SAT. It’s a constellation of satellites that use multi-spectral satellite imagery and AI, aiming to provide near-real-time insights,” he said. “It can detect fires as small as 270 square feet, about the size of a one-car garage. Our first satellite is in orbit now, and when fully operational, imagery will be updated with a much greater frequency, down from every 12 hours today to every 20 minutes.”
