Google on Wednesday unveiled a series of updates for Gemini – the AI assistant on Android. The most notable new feature is the ability to use AI to perform multi-step tasks, for example ordering Uber or food delivery. Along with this, Gemini gains other improvements: improved detection of fraudulent calls and an update to Circle to Search, which now recognizes all elements on the device’s screen.
According to the company, automation allows users to effectively transfer their “to-do lists” to Gemini. However, the capabilities are currently limited and only partially available.
The feature, currently in beta, will initially support selected apps from the dining, groceries, and rides categories. It will also be available only in the Gemini app on certain devices – specifically the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S26 series. Initially, the new feature will be available only in the USA and South Korea.
In addition, Google has introduced safeguards: automation can be initiated only with the explicit command of the device owner. While executing, the user can monitor the process in real time and stop the task if it makes a mistake or hangs. It is also noted that automations occur in a secure virtual window on the phone, where Gemini has access only to a limited set of apps and does not have access to the rest of the device’s data.
This initiative highlights the growing trend of using AI to automate everyday tasks. Indeed, among competitors and peers in this field are ChatGPT with the ability to create tasks by schedule or time triggers, Claude AI from Anthropic for non-coding tasks involving files, and OpenClaw, which helps manage daily actions – from sending emails to checking calendar queries.
Another Gemini update is the expansion of the Scam Detection feature for calls: now it is available on Samsung Galaxy S26 devices in the USA (earlier support was for Pixel in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, and the United Kingdom). Gemini will also use a local model to detect scam texts in the USA, Canada, and the United Kingdom on the Pixel 10, and later – on the Galaxy S26.
Additionally, Circle to Search can now search for everything visible on the screen, not just a single object. This means you will be able to search for full outfits or accessories in an image and explore related topics directly from the screen.
Google continues to roll out Gemini updates systematically through OS updates and Pixel Drops. At the same time, Apple is developing a more complete suite of AI features, which may include integration with Siri, whose launch had been planned to be postponed to later this year.
The new update underscores the growing trend of using AI to automate everyday tasks on Android. It points to a future of more convenient and autonomous interactions with devices in daily life.
