Google Messages will soon let users share live locations directly within conversations, closing a years-long gap with competing messaging platforms like iMessage and WhatsApp. The real-time location feature appeared in an APK teardown of the latest Messages beta (version 20260220_01_RC00) by Android Authority.

Users will find a new “Real-time Location” option in the attachment sheet when sending messages. Unlike the current static location sharing that sends a one-time Google Maps pin, the new system updates continuously as people move.
It offers three duration options: one hour, today only, or custom time periods. A persistent banner appears at the top of active conversations showing location sharing is enabled and displaying remaining time. Tapping this banner provides a quick stop option.
The feature works across different device configurations without requiring both users to have the latest app version. Recipients receive a live location link that opens either in Google’s Find Hub app or a web browser for real-time tracking.
This integration leverages Android’s existing Find Hub infrastructure, which already provides similar live location capabilities outside of messaging apps.

Google Messages has evolved significantly over recent years with RCS adoption, message reactions, inline replies, and improved media sharing tools. Real-time location represents one of the last major features missing compared to third-party chat applications.
Apple’s iMessage has offered live location sharing since iOS 17 launched in 2023, while WhatsApp added similar functionality years earlier through its parent company Meta.
The beta discovery follows earlier hints of location sharing development spotted back in November 2025. No official rollout timeline exists yet for public availability.
