On this occasion, the company has announced that its artificial intelligence functionality will undergo considerable expansion throughout users’ email interfaces. Google states that three billion people depend on Gmail for their email requirements, having already experienced various AI-driven tools such as Smart Replies and intelligent spam filtering.
However, a recently unveiled capability will maintain a far more prominent presence within people’s email accounts. Gmail will incorporate advanced AI technology, enabling users to customise and condense the most crucial information requiring their attention, complete with tailored briefings and emphasised task lists.

Posting on X, Gmail’s official account said: “Gmail’s new AI Inbox is like having a personalised briefing, highlighting to-dos and catching you up on what matters. We’re rolling this out to trusted testers first, with broader availability coming in the months ahead.”
While the idea of an AI having direct access to all your emails may raise some eyebrows, Google has assured that any analysis from the AI for use in the AI inbox will be secure and adhere to Google’s privacy protection standards. The tech giant has previously stated that it doesn’t utilise content from Gmail emails for training its AI.
Moreover, those who can currently access the feature have the option to disable AI features in Gmail.
Despite Google announcing these new changes today (January 9), the majority of users worldwide won’t yet have access. Google revealed that the new AI features coming to Gmail, powered by its latest Gemini 3 AI, will initially be available to Gmail users in the U.S and those subscribed to Google AI Pro and Ultra.
Additionally, the features are currently only available in English. However, Google has confirmed plans to gradually introduce them into other languages and regions over the coming months.
This follows Google’s previous release of an AI-powered writing assistant designed to aid users in composing or responding to emails with quick prompts.
No specific date has been provided as to when the feature will be rolled out to the UK and the rest of the world. However, given Google’s eagerness to expand its AI services, it shouldn’t be too long a wait.
