The central story emerging today surrounds US weapons supplies for Ukraine.
We brought you news of a report that Donald Trump was set to announce a weapons deal for Kyiv.
It comes on the back of him promising the first weapons package of his presidency – which includes Patriot air defence systems.
Well, Germany’s defence minister Boris Pistorius is heading to Washington today, to seemingly talk about the very same topuc.
He is seeking clarity on American arms supplies to Ukraine.
During his second term, there have been concerns from European allies over Trump’s commitment to Ukraine.
Pistorius is due to meet with US defence secretary Pete Hegseth.
During the meeting, they will discuss Berlin’s offer to pay for American Patriot air defence systems for Ukraine.
This was a proposal first made by Chancellor Friedrich Merz weeks ago.
Germany has already donated three Patriot units to Kyiv, as Ukraine has faced some of the heaviest Russian attacks in recent weeks.
One of Vladimir Putin’s envoys has said the Russia-US dialogue will continue, in spite of what he claimed were “doomed attempts at pressure”.
Putin’s investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev made the comments on Telegram.
He said: “This dialogue will continue – despite the titanic efforts to disrupt it by all possible means.”
Dmitriev also criticised the Biden administration’s handling of the war.
He went on to claim that the US would try to understand what he called “Russia’s legitimate interests”.
Two more people have died after Russian strikes overnight.
According to the Ukraine emergency service, another two people have died – this time in Donetsk.
In a statement, the service said: “Over the past day, the occupiers have shelled settlements in the Donetsk region 21 times.”
In the Bokove village, a drone hit a vehicle, killing two men.
More details of attacks…
An 86-year-old woman was also said to have been hospitalised after being caught in an attack.
The Kherson military administration said she had been in her garden during the attack.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff said in Sumy, a Russian drone struck a school as well.
Now, at least five people have been killed overnight.
Previously, see our 7.51 post, two men in the Sumy region and one person in Kherson had died.
Ukrainian drones attacked a training centre at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant overnight, the Russian-installed administration has claimed.
The nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), previously said that its people there had heard “hundreds of rounds of small arms fire… the latest sign of military activity potentially threatening nuclear safety”.
The Russian administration claimed this was a drone attack.
It said: “The enemy used three unmanned aerial vehicles.”
It added that “no critical” damage was recorded.
Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia plant in the first weeks of Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The station, Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant, is not operating but still requires power to keep its nuclear fuel cool.
The plant’s Russia-installed management said in its statement that the station “continues to operate normally, with all necessary safety precautions in place”.
Here are some of the latest pictures from Ukraine.
We brought you news earlier, see our 7.51 post, of the latest Russian attacks across Ukraine.
State emergency services have released pictures that they say show fires in the aftermath of strikes in the Dnipropetrovsk region and Mykolaiv.
At least three people have died in overnight Russian attacks.
Such strikes are a regular feature of the war.
We’ll round up the latest strikes here…
In the Sumy region, the local military administration said Russian attacks claimed two lives and left at least nine injured.
In the Shostka area, two men aged 50 and 55 were said to have been killed after being caught out on the street during an attack.
Four others were injured in a strike on apartment buildings, the local administration added.
Then, in Kherson, Russian strikes were said to have hit residential areas.
One person died and six others were injured, a local spokesperson said.
In Dniprovsky, three people were injured in drone attacks.
This was said to include two 13-year-old girls said to be in a “moderate condition” and a 51-year-old man in a “serious condition”.
Fires also broke out following the strike.
Finally, in Zaporizhia in the south of the country, a 77-year-old woman was injured by another Russian attack.
Donald Trump’s Ukraine envoy has arrived in Kyiv this morning.
Keith Kellogg has travelled to the Ukrainian capital to discuss security and sanctions against Russia, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff.
In a post on Telegram, Andriy Yermak said: “We welcome the special representative of the US President, Keith Kellogg, to Ukraine.
“Defence, strengthening security, weapons, sanctions, protecting our people, strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the US – many topics for conversation.
“Russia does not want to cease fire. Peace through strength is the principle of US President Donald Trump and we support this approach.”
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is set to meet Donald Trump later today.
It comes on the heels of the US president announcing plans to sell NATO allies weapons they can pass on to Ukraine.
Rutte is in Washington today and tomorrow and plans to hold talks with Trump, secretary of state Marco Rubio, defence secretary Pete Hegseth and members of congress too.
“I’m gonna have a meeting with the secretary general who’s coming in tomorrow,” Trump told reporters as he arrived in Washington on Sunday night.
“But we basically are going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated [weapons] and they’re gonna pay us 100% for them.”
‘You’ll see weapons flowing’
A top ally of Trump, Republican senator Lindsey Graham, said late yesterday that the conflict was nearing an inflection point.
“In the coming days, you’ll see weapons flowing at a record level to help Ukraine defend themselves,” Graham told CBS.
He added: “One of the biggest miscalculations Putin has made is to play Trump.
“And you just watch, in the coming days and weeks, there’s going to be a massive effort to get Putin to the table.”
Donald Trump is reportedly going to announce a new weapons plan for Ukraine later today.
According to Axios, citing two sources familiar with the matter, the US president is expected to arm Kyiv in a sharp departure from his earlier stance.
It comes after Trump said on Sunday he would send Patriot air defence missiles to Ukraine.
These were necessary, Trump said, because Russian President Vladimir Putin “talks nice but then he bombs everybody in the evening”.
Trump didn’t say how many Patriot systems he planned to send to Ukraine, but said he would be reimbursed for their cost by the EU.
“We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need, because Putin really surprised a lot of people,” Trump said.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, he added: “[Putin] talks nice and then bombs everybody in the evening.
“But there’s a little bit of a problem there. I don’t like it.
“We basically are going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment. They are going to pay us 100% for that, and that’s the way we want it.”
The US president has seemingly grown disenchanted with Putin as the Russian leader has resisted his attempts to negotiate a ceasefire.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked for more defensive capabilities to fend off the daily attacks from Russia.

Good morning and welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.
As usual, we’re starting the week by zooming out to give you an overview of the key movements in the war over the last seven days.
Before we begin, here’s a map showing the latest situation on the battlefield.
Now, here’s everything you need to know:
Trump’s ‘major announcement’
All eyes are on Washington today for when Donald Trump reveals the “major announcement” on Russia that he promised last week.
Ukraine’s supporters in Washington and Kyiv are hoping the president might put his weight behind a new sanctions bill on Russia.
The bipartisan bill, championed by Republican senator Lindsey Graham, has gained momentum in the Senate and would introduce a wide range of direct and indirect restrictions on Russia.
Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Vladimir Putin in recent weeks over the Russian leader’s reluctance to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Last week, he promised to send a new weapons package to Ukraine – the first of his presidency, which includes Patriot air defence systems.
Russia ramps up aerial attacks
Trump’s big announcement comes after yet another week of heavy Russian attacks on Ukraine, including the two largest overnight aerial bombardments of the war so far.
Moscow launched a combined 741 drones and missiles at Ukraine on 9 July, following it up with 623 more last Friday night.
More than six times as many Russian drones and missiles have been launched on Ukraine in 2025 than at this time last year.
As a result of those aerial attacks, the toll of civilians killed and wounded increased to 6,719, up about 53% from the same period in 2024, according to UN monitors.
June marked the highest monthly civilian casualty toll in three years, with 232 killed and 1,343 wounded, according to the UN.
Kellogg in Kyiv
Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine is visiting Kyiv today to engage in military-level discussions.
His arrival follows the resumption of US military aid shipments to Ukraine, with Zelenskyy calling on allies to strength the country’s defence capabilities through weapons support.
Talks are also expected to address tougher sanctions on Moscow.
Rutte in Washington
NATO boss Mark Rutte is in Washington today for meetings with Donald Trump and his top cabinet officials.
The press release announcing the visit did not give an immediate reason for the trip, but could be linked to Trump’s willingness to supply weapons to Ukraine via NATO.
Rutte will also hold talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and defence secretary Pete Hegseth during his two-day trip.
SBU colonel killed
Ukraine’s security service (SBU) accused Russia of being behind the murder of one of its intelligence officers in Kyiv last Thursday.
Colonel Ivan Voronych was shot several times in a car park after being approached by an unidentified assailant who then fled the scene, CCTV footage showed.
The SBU said the FSB, Russia’s primary domestic security and intelligence agency, was behind the murder and said that the two individuals responsible – a man and a woman – were located and killed after they resisted arrest on Sunday.
The operation to find the killers was personally led by SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk.
