Android Headlines / Android News / Pixel Tablet owners rejoice: OS updates will continue until 2028
Google has confirmed a longer lifespan for the Pixel Tablet and will now be pushing OS updates to the device for two more years than it had originally planned. With two more years of OS updates, users will be able to keep the tablet fresh with new features for a longer period of time.
Google’s Pixel Tablet was destined to receive just three years of OS updates back when it was originally launched, and up until just recently, that was still the case. Three years of OS updates is about standard for many of Google’s Android partners. Even if Google and Samsung have committed to longer lifespans at this point for their phones, it isn’t the same for all devices from either company.
The Pixel Tablet was one of these devices from Google. Sure, it’s a Pixel device, but it’s not one of the newer Pixel phones. Remember, seven years of OS and security updates didn’t start until the Pixel 8 series. And even though it’s common for many OEMs to offer three or even two years of OS updates, that doesn’t make it any less disappointing to learn that your device won’t be getting new software versions or their associated features. That’s all changing now for the Pixel Tablet, as Google breathes new life into it.
If you were bummed about your Pixel Tablet going outdated in terms of the software version, it’s time to cheer up. Google’s support page used to say that the OS updates would stop this coming June. However, as 9To5Google notes (via Android Authority), Google seems to have updated this page.
It now confirms that OS updates will continue until June 2028. That means the tablet will get a little more attention and should help users extend their use of the device. More importantly, it means that if they were really only concerned about having the latest software, they won’t have to buy new hardware yet.
Since Google isn’t planning on making a new Pixel Tablet, this is the next best thing. Because at least it’ll feel like new with new software and features. Google is also keen to point out that this includes five years of OS updates and five years of security updates. New features will mostly come from Pixel Feature Drops, just like they do with the phones.
