Google has improved the travel experiences for its Wallet app users. The app now supports live flight updates, letting passengers track their journey right from the lock screen. This feature appears to be rolling out with the latest version of the app, so make sure to keep it updated.
For the uninitiated, Google Wallet is a digital platform that lets you store things like payment cards, boarding passes, and event tickets in one place. The latest update makes the platform even more useful for travelers. Once you add a boarding pass, the app now shows live flight information on the lock screen. This ensures that your current flight is visible at a glance.
The feature triggers shortly before the flight takes off, with a small Wallet logo icon appearing on the status bar. The widget shows the estimated arrival time and airline details along with a small airplane icon. Thanks to the progress bar, you can see when the flight reaches the destination. It is worth mentioning that the update is visible on the always-on display as well.
When you tap the widget, it simply opens the usual ticket page inside Google Wallet. At the bottom, you will find a link to Google Flights, which opens as a web search result. Apart from flight tickets, Live Updates should also support train trips and other live events.
This development may also allow Samsung users to experience flight updates through the Now Bar. If you are unfamiliar, Now Bar is a pill-shaped UI element that shows live activities on the lock screen and always-on display. This comes in handy to quickly see key information without opening apps. Now that Google Wallet supports live flight updates, the Now Bar should surface them as well.
If you are already using the latest version of Google Wallet, the new feature should be available right away. You can update the app through the Google Play Store.
