Ask a dozen local business owners how their website is doing and most will say the same thing: it looks fine, a designer built it, and the phone still rings mostly from word of mouth. Ask how many customers found them through a Google search last month and the answer is usually a shrug. For a great many small businesses the honest number is close to zero, and the website is a brochure nobody opens.
That is rarely because the website is bad. It is because nobody has checked whether Google can find it, read it and keep it, and the checking is now free. A handful of free SEO tools, and one free SEO audit report in particular, will tell an owner in an afternoon what an agency would charge a month’s fees to discover.
Google does not show every page on the internet. It stores the pages it has decided are worth keeping and shows a few of those for any search. A business website has to pass three gates: Google has to discover the page exists, crawl it and read it, and decide to keep it in the index. A page that fails any gate appears for nothing, not even the business’s own name.
Google’s free reporting tool, Search Console, has a status for pages stuck at the last gate: “crawled, currently not indexed”. Google looked and chose not to keep the page. For new or rarely updated local sites that status is common, and it is invisible unless someone goes looking.
When a site is audited properly, the same handful of issues turn up again and again, and almost none of them are visible to the owner looking at the site in a browser.
A leftover instruction telling Google to stay away. Developers block search engines while a site is being built. It is one line of code, and it is forgotten more often than anyone admits. The site looks perfect and is invisible.
Pages that say nothing Google can use. A homepage with a logo, a slideshow and a phone number gives Google almost no text. It cannot know the business is a plumber in a particular town if the page never says so in words.
No sitemap, or a broken one. A sitemap is the list of pages a site asks Google to look at. Many small sites have none, or one that lists pages that no longer exist.
Slow or broken pages on phones. Most local searches happen on a phone, and Google judges the phone version of a site. A page that takes eight seconds to load on mobile data is a page many people, and Google, give up on.
Duplicate or missing page titles. The title is the blue link a searcher clicks. Ten pages all titled “Home” tell Google nothing and tell the searcher less.
None of these need a marketing budget. They need to be found, and that is what an audit is for.

A Google index check. Type the site’s address into Google with “site:” in front of it, for example site:yourbusiness.ca. The results are the pages Google has kept. If the number is far smaller than the number of pages on the site, pages are missing; if it is zero, the site is not indexed at all. Keyword ideas from Google’s own suggestions. Type the business’s service and town into Google and read the autocomplete list. Those phrases are what real people type, and a page that uses them in its title and first paragraph has a reason to appear. Free tools expand a seed phrase into the full list of questions and variations.
And one free account: Google Search Console. Ten minutes to set up, and it lists every page Google knows about, every page it has declined to index, and the reason. It also shows the searches that led people to the site, which for many owners is the first time they have seen that data.
Any audit or tool that promises rankings. An SEO audit report can tell you whether Google can reach, read and store your pages. It cannot tell you where those pages will rank, because ranking depends on what every other business in town has done as well. Being in the index is admission, not position. A free technical SEO audit that says so plainly is more trustworthy than a paid one that does not.
Once the blockers are removed and the pages say what the business does and where, Google usually re-indexes within days for a site it already knows and within a few weeks for a site it has been ignoring. Appearing for the business’s own name comes first. Appearing for “plumber in Thunder Bay” comes later, if at all, and depends on reviews, links from other local sites, and consistency across the business’s listings.
The practical lesson is that a website only earns its keep if it can be found, and finding out whether it can be found now costs nothing but an hour and a free SEO audit report. For most local businesses, that hour is the highest return marketing activity of the year.
