Google says the change is aimed at stopping tactics where publishers or networks try to artificially influence what AI systems say, rather than focusing on genuine, helpful content for users.
Google Search has updated its search spam policies to explicitly target attempts to manipulate its systems using AI-generated content, as the company moves to protect both traditional rankings and its growing AI-powered search features.
The update clarifies that spam rules now apply not only to standard search results, but also to AI Overviews and other generative AI responses shown inside Google Search.
This means any attempt to “game” AI outputs, such as flooding the web with mass-produced AI articles or trying to bias AI recommendations, can now be treated as a spam violation.

Examples include large-scale production of low-quality AI articles designed purely to rank, or “recommendation poisoning”, where content is engineered to push specific sites or brands into AI-generated answers.

With Google increasingly showing AI-generated summaries at the top of results, the company says it must ensure these systems are not being manipulated in the same way traditional search rankings have been targeted in the past.
Under the updated rules, sites that engage in such behaviour risk demotion in search rankings or removal from Google Search altogether. However, Google maintains that AI-generated content itself is not banned; what matters is intent and quality.
Content that is helpful, original, and made for users remains acceptable, even if it is AI-assisted.
The update also reflects growing concern over what industry experts call “generative engine optimisation”, where publishers try to influence how AI systems cite or summarise content.
Google says such tactics undermine trust in search results and distort the quality of information users receive.
Overall, the policy signals a stricter stance from Google as it adapts its anti-spam systems for an AI-driven search era, where both traditional links and AI-generated answers are now part of the same ecosystem.
